Learning a language can be frustrating. There are many phone apps that promise to teach you a language but, for the most part, they really just teach you words. That’s useful, but to be conversational, you really need something better.

There’s no shortage of quick introduction videos on YouTube and grammar lessons that can get you a crude start on a language, but it is a long way to get to conversational.

Of course, the gold standard is to go live where they speak your target language and make friends with people and talk. That’s the quickest way to get really good. You can also use apps to converse with people at a distance who are trying to learn your language. Those are actually nice (I use Tandem) but there can be problems. First, people aren’t always on the same schedule. Plus, you need to reciprocate and help the other person with their English. But the worst part is that, especially when you are starting out, you will feel a lot of pressure and embarrassment because your fluency is so poor. Of course, it is. That’s why you are trying to learn!

Enter ChatGPT. It is ready when you are. It won’t get impatient if you are gone for the weekend. It will talk about whatever you want to talk about. It will kindly correct all your mistakes no matter how small. And it never gets…
